Somatic Experiencing
A body-based approach to nervous system healing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-focused approach to healing that works with the nervous system, physical sensations, and your internal experience to support a gradual return to regulation and a felt sense of safety.
Offered at our Belconnen clinic in Canberra, this approach is particularly helpful for those experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, overwhelm, or symptoms that feel connected to the nervous system.
Rather than focusing purely on thoughts or talking through experiences, Somatic Experiencing recognises that how we feel is deeply connected to what is happening within the body. The nervous system influences every organ, every sensation, and every aspect of how we respond to the world around us.
When the nervous system is supported, the body can begin to shift out of patterns of stress and into a state that allows for healing, resilience, and improved overall wellbeing.
Understanding the nervous system
The nervous system plays a central role in how we experience stress, safety, and connection.
It is designed to protect you, with powerful built-in responses such as fight or flight. These responses help the body mobilise quickly in response to perceived threat. There is also a freeze response, where the system becomes immobilised as a way of coping.
For some people, the nervous system can become stuck in these patterns. It may cycle between fight or flight and freeze, without finding a sense of resolution or safety. This can lead to symptoms such as:
- Anxiety or ongoing stress
- Feeling overwhelmed or easily triggered
- Fatigue or shutdown
- A sense of being “stuck” or unable to move forward
- Difficulty relaxing or feeling at ease
Over time, this dysregulation can affect both emotional wellbeing and physical health.
How Somatic Experiencing works
Somatic Experiencing supports the nervous system to gradually return to a more regulated state.
This process is not forced or rushed. Instead, sessions are guided by your body’s capacity, allowing changes to occur in a way that feels safe and sustainable.
In some cases, the body may need to express or complete stress responses that were previously interrupted. Through gentle awareness and guidance, this allows the body to recognise that the threat has passed.
As a result, the nervous system receives the message that it is safe in the present moment. From here, it can begin to release stored survival energy, deactivate stress responses such as fight or flight, and move towards rest and restoration.
Moving Towards a Felt Sense of Safety
A key aim of Somatic Experiencing is to support you in developing a felt sense of safety within your own body.
This develops gradually over time. As the nervous system becomes more regulated, many people notice:
- A greater sense of calm and stability
- Improved resilience to stress
- Reduced emotional reactivity
- Increased awareness of bodily sensations
- A stronger connection to themselves
This internal sense of safety is an important foundation for both emotional and physical healing.
Why a Body-Based Approach Matters
While cognitive and talk-based therapies can be helpful, they do not always fully address what is happening within the body.
Stress and trauma are not only experienced mentally — they are held within the nervous system and physiology. This can influence hormones, neurotransmitters, and many other biological processes.
If these underlying patterns are not addressed, progress may feel incomplete or short-lived.
Somatic Experiencing works directly with the body, supporting deeper and more integrated shifts in health.
Supported by Research and Clinical Practice
Somatic Experiencing is informed by advances in our understanding of the nervous system and trauma.
This includes the work of pioneers such as Dr. Peter Levine and Dr. Stephen Porges, whose research has contributed significantly to how we understand stress responses and nervous system regulation.
These approaches have supported many people in processing stress and trauma safely, particularly where a purely cognitive approach has not been sufficient.
What to Expect in a Session
Sessions are gentle, collaborative, and guided by your individual capacity.
There is no requirement to revisit or relive past experiences. Instead, the focus is on what is happening within your body in the present moment and supporting it towards regulation.
Sessions may include:
- Awareness of physical sensations
- Tracking nervous system responses
- Building capacity for safety and regulation
- Supporting the release of held stress patterns
Each session is tailored to you, ensuring the process remains supportive and not overwhelming.
An Integrative Approach
Somatic Experiencing can be used on its own or integrated with naturopathy and Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), depending on your needs.
At our Belconnen clinic, this allows both the physical and nervous system aspects of health to be addressed within the same consultation, supporting more comprehensive outcomes.
