Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) – Belconnen, Canberra
A structured mind-body approach to resolving stress patterns
Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a gentle, structured mind-body approach that supports the resolution of unresolved stress patterns held within the body.
Offered at our Belconnen clinic in Canberra, NET is particularly helpful for those experiencing recurring emotional responses, ongoing stress, or physical symptoms that may have an underlying stress component.
NET works with the connection between the nervous system, physiology, and past experiences — recognising that stress is not only something we think about, but something that is stored and expressed within the body.
What is NET?
NET is a process that helps identify and resolve what are known as Neuro Emotional Complexes (NECs) — unresolved physiological stress responses linked to past experiences.
Emotions and stress are naturally associated with physical responses in the body. Under normal circumstances, the body is able to process and resolve these experiences effectively.
However, during times of heightened stress, illness, or trauma, this process may become interrupted. When this happens, the physiological response linked to the experience may remain unresolved or “stuck.”
These unresolved patterns can then continue to be triggered over time.
NET works by identifying these patterns and supporting the body to process and resolve them.
Importantly, NET does not treat emotions directly — it works with the physical stress response in which the emotion is a component.
Why do These Patterns Persist?
Human physiology is influenced by conditioning.
As described in classical conditioning research, the body can learn to associate certain stimuli with specific responses. Over time, this response may be triggered not only by the original situation, but by similar or related experiences — a process known as stimulus generalisation.
This means that past stress responses can be reactivated in present-day situations, even when the original event is no longer relevant.
While the body has a natural ability to “extinguish” or resolve these conditioned responses, this process does not always occur fully.
When this happens, the same patterns may continue to repeat — often outside of conscious awareness.
Physical Symptoms and Stress
In some cases, physical symptoms may have an associated stress component.
When stress patterns remain unresolved, they can influence the body in subtle or more noticeable ways. NET can be used to assess whether this is relevant and, if so, support the body in processing the associated stress.
This can be particularly helpful where symptoms are recurring or not fully resolving with physical treatment alone.
Congruence Between Conscious and Subconscious Patterns
At times, there can be a disconnect between what we consciously want and what is occurring at a deeper level within the body.
For example, you may have clear intentions or goals yet find it difficult to follow through or create lasting change.
NET can be used to assess whether there is an incongruence between conscious intentions and subconscious physiological patterns. If present, the process supports the body in resolving the stress that may be contributing to this mismatch.
A Practical Example
These patterns can show up in many areas of life.
For example, in parenting, a person may find themselves reacting to their child in a way that feels familiar but not aligned with how they would like to respond. Despite awareness, the same emotional pattern may repeat.
In this context, the trigger becomes an opportunity to identify and resolve the underlying pattern — supporting more conscious, present, and regulated responses over time.
A Gentle, Structured Process
NET is a gentle and efficient process that works with the body’s physiology in a structured way.
It does not require reliving past experiences or extensive discussion. Instead, it focuses on identifying the physiological stress response and supporting the body to process it.
Sessions are guided by what your system is ready for, ensuring the process remains supportive and not overwhelming.
An Integrated Approach
NET may be used on its own or alongside naturopathy and Somatic Experiencing, depending on your needs.
At our Belconnen clinic, this allows both physical and nervous system factors to be addressed within the same consultation, supporting a more comprehensive and effective approach to care.
